“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loves us.” Romans 8:37
A Christian is as human as any other persons who belong to other religions or even atheists with only an exception that a Christian enjoys a divine power through the love of God in Christ that makes a Christian more than a conqueror. It is very exciting to learn from the word of God that a believer in Christ in every way stands loved by God through Christ no matter the circumstances surrounding the believer, especially adverse times. Knowing that God loves me eternally is one reason for which I am always proud and grateful to God that he so loves me as such.
Writing to a persecuted congregation in Rome, the persecuted apostle Paul has found grounds for continued stand in Christ from the fact of God’s eternal love for them that is above the hardships they were going through. The believers in Rome experienced lots of hardships including but not limited to persecution, in which many were put to the sword. In his powerful message in the 10 versed passage, Paul raises very pertinent rhetorical questions that I would like to put to you.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring charge against those whom God has chosen? Who then is the one who condemns? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Dear friend, consider the above questions very carefully! It is my aim here to point you to God’s unfailing love for us through Christ even if we appear to be facing times that seems to suggest God is far from us. In fact, I want to say that God is not and will never be far from us in every way and at all times, he is present in times of need. Remember his promise in Hebrews 13:5, that he will never leave you nor will he forsake you. Why, because he is Immanuel, God with us, he will therefore always be with us, rejoice even in that situation, for he is with you.
Two quick points I want to drive you to; no one can be against us as long as God is for, and that God’s love for us is eternal.
Imagine how awesome this God of creation is. How big is he? How powerful is this God who holds the world? How great is this God who is beyond the galaxies? Isn’t he the Lord who roared in thunder at the mount Sinai where the Hebrews demanded to meet him? Didn’t they quickly asked Moses alone to be the one to speak to God when they were frightened by his presence in thunder and quakes? I must confess, he is beyond my imagination, from the time I started to know God, it was easier for me to imagine him when I was young, the more I grow and become intimate to him, the more unimaginable he becomes to me. Surely he is beyond the galaxies, he is beyond what science can prove, he is beyond my comprehension, yet he loves me, he cares for me, he knows me by name and he says through Christ I am more than a conqueror.
Are you a Christian going through a tough time basically because of your faith in the Lord Jesus? You may find courage and strength in these words of apostle Paul. Are you a Christian feeling as though you have been abandoned by God for various circumstances surrounding you? No, he hasn’t abandoned you, you just need to deepen your understanding of him and his love and care for you. I can at least testify using his written word and through some of my life experiences that going through hard times is not an exception to a believer, instead hard times ends up in defining who we are in Christ, that we are more than conquerors.
In Christ, no one can be against you. Yes, sometimes people win cases and arguments against us, sometimes we lose chunks to those against us, but ultimately we win only if we continue in the love he has bestowed on us. On his part, his love for us cannot be withdrawn or be taken from us by circumstances, but what about your duty, do you do your part to be in the love? If we decide to remain in him, then surely I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor death, nor anything else can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And if nothing can separate us from his love, then indeed we are more than conquerors in Christ.
