“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
One fact about the Christian life is that it is not utopian because the Christian is yet here and now. No doubt shall the utopian life be in eternity with God in paradise where there will be no tears because God in Christ will wipe away our tears and certainly no pain, cancer, diabetes, heart diseases and no other disease will torment us. Moments of temptation neither shall come our way, they only come in the here and now life, but never in the there and then. I have some encouragement for you as you might experience tempting times, and the simple words are God’s faithful.
All Christians will be tempted, an American Puritan preacher remarked: “All men are tempted. There is no man that lives that can’t be broken down, provided it is the right temptation, put in the right spot.” Henry Ward Beecher. Yes, you and I will be tempted. In the above words of the epistle to the Corinthians, Paul had these to say;
No temptation is peculiar to an individual
The apostle remarked that “the temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.” The apostles word is clear, what you experience is not strange; another Christian elsewhere does experience it. Sometimes when I go through certain times, I am tempted to think that such is limited to me. But hearing the testimonies of other Christians has proved to me Paul’s word; I discover what I go through is not only my experience, but another’s too.
Part of Grand Richison’s commentary on this statement reads: It is encouraging to know that God deems temptation a common experience among Christians. No one is exempt from solicitation to evil. Temptations are not peculiar to us. There is nothing unique about our temptations. We are not the only one who ever went through that temptation. We say, “No one ever had such loss as I have had. I grieve over that mate who left me. That wayward child distresses me deeply. No one had such financial loss as me.” So fellow Christian, be bold when the tempting times comes because when it does……….
This is a good news that when we go through the temptations, God is faithful. Two of the greatest verses that always cools my heart at tempting times are; God’s word to Paul when he was in a condition which he described as thorn in the flesh and a word to the Hebrews.
Let me begin by the first, God told Paul when he prayed for God to remove away the thorn from his flesh that “my grace is sufficient for you” and secondly, the word to the Hebrews says; “I will never leave you, I never forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). This means that God is not only sovereign over the temptation, but he actually even cares for you in the very moment of the temptations. “Whatever our trouble, whatever our trial, He will see us through it because of His immutable character” (Richison). Whatever temptations you can name, truly the verdict is: God is faithful and in his faithfulness, he will;
Not allow the temptation to overwhelm you
The most depressing thing is not to go through a temptation but to be overwhelmed by the temptation. To be overwhelmed means to be over powered. When young, we used to wrestle and the most disappointing moment is when your opponent overwhelms or defeats you. This could be a good analogy, temptations can truly be a very wrestling moment and either side has to be defeated. And we have read the verdict above, the wrestle will never end in our defeat, it will never overwhelm us. Instead when in it, God will make a way of escape for us.
These words clearly suggest that temptations though may manifest in a physical form are spiritual and so a spiritual not human force is needed to defeat it. In this case, God himself will provide us a way out when the temptations come. This is great, isn’t? And amazingly, before the way out comes, he [God] will also give us the strength to stand under the temptation.
What an assuring encouragement to us. Look at the series of the assurances we get from this verse: first, any temptation one goes through is never peculiar to you. Secondly, if the temptation will come, God is very faithful and he will care for us. In his care, he will make a way for us amidst the temptation and right before the way out, he gives us the strength to stand during the temptation.
Let us make God our strength at all times, including times of temptation, such that we can overcome instead of being overcome.
