The problem is man’s heart not the Gospel

This quote by Ravi Zacharias is taken from O Christian Quotes in which the contemporary Christian apologist Ravi castigates atheism for often accusing Christianity pointing to the excesses of man in contradiction to the gospel. Ravi out rightly puts that it is the problem of the heart of man which is “deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9) and not the gospel. It is for this condition of the heart that the Gospel is, that there should be a transformation of the heart.

Through out history we have seen how the gospel has continued to transform people. Saul the persecutor, a murderer was transformed to Paul, a man who worked all his best to see others transformed by the same force that transformed him. He in fact said that “Christ came to save sinners of whom he is the worst” (1 Timothy 1:15). He has written volumes on love and peace making upon which several approaches, insights and philosophies to love and peace are drawn from today.

Zacchaeus the short man who had to climb a Sycamore tree to see Jesus because of his height was a corrupt revenue collector. He had collected in some cases much more than he should have, thus cheating people. When encountered by the gospel, he was able to repent and promise to return back what he cheated, not only in full but even four times, being a revenue collector he knew the interest of the money he cheated from the people. What an amazing transformation!

Several people to mention but a few in the scriptures were transformed and made knew for the transforming power of the Gospel, because if anyone be in Christ, he is a new creation. Ravi himself being one contemporary example, and myself, Tabi Julius Izza know quite well where the gospel found me and how it has now changed my life. I know for sure, those who turn to him with all their hearts, will have there hearts transformed.

When we see people whom we think are Christians but doing the contrary of the gospel, it is either they have been pretending to be Christians, or a question of discipleship or have stopped being Christians. They need the gospel as much as those who have never been associated to Christianity for transformation.

The gospel transforms, the gospel is a solution to the problem of man’s heart. Only God, the architect of the heart can through the gospel mend it, cure it.
