You need an encounter with God

#DailyDevotion Wednesday May 10, 2017
You need an encounter with God (Job 42:5).
Have you an encounter with God? Are you just a religious man without having experienced God? If yes, you need an encounter with God today. The story of Job ends with a confession in which Job acknowledged having only heard about God without seeing or experiencing God. In a lengthy conversation with his four friends, Job tried to defend his righteousness, he spoke things he didn’t understand about God. It was until Job encountered God that his view about God and his suffering changed. Job confessed, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” he went on to repent of his foolish words, “Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:5-6). Like Job, many times in our religious quest, we hear about God without encountering him. All of us must move from just hearing about God to having an encounter with God.
An encounter with God should shape our worldview, expose our ignorance about Him, reveal our sinfulness and create a spiritual thirst that drive us towards God. It is possible to engage in religious activities without encountering God. It is possible to belong to a church without encountering God. It is possible to even engage in church leadership without an encounter with God. However, in this era we can have an encounter with God through his son Jesus Christ. An encounter with God is a rebirth, one becomes a new creation on an encounter with God through Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). An encounter with God transforms us from a quarrelling attitude when we suffer to a rejoicing attitude because those who have encountered God “know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purposes.” Unless you encounter God, you will always live by what you hear about him but not what you have experienced of him. You can encounter God today through his son Jesus Christ. Jesus longs to have an encounter with you too. He says; “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (Revelation 3:20). Pray that Christ comes into your heart, encounter him today. Amen! Rev. J
