The LORD watches over the way of the righteous (Psalm 1:6)

We are in an era when the church is being infiltrated by a teaching which if not checked, will derail many in the church from seeking righteousness. It is called the prosperity Gospel where one’s faith is often measured by one’s material possession. This gospel is very dangerous in that it places more emphasis on quantity, thus it preaches material blessings other than the quality of the spiritual life. Can one’s faith be quantified? Is material possession really a measure of one’s faith? Absolutely not! Psalm 1 points us to a way of blessing and prosperity that is completely contrary to that packed in the prosperity gospel. The way to be blessed shown here is to shun evil and the company of the wicked. To delight in the word of God day and night. Psalm 1 reads; “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by the streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, whatever they do prospers. Not so with the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.”

The biblical view of blessing goes beyond material prosperity, although those who fear the LORD and make good stewardship of God’s resources will have material prosperity. The priority in a believers life is to focus on the quality of his or her spiritual life. One can constantly improve the quality of his spiritual life by shunning evil, delighting in the word of God, and ensuring an unbroken fellowship with God mediated through the LORD Jesus Christ as enabled by the Holy Spirit. God desires that we prosper in all things (3 John 1:2). He only wants us to start right. Do not first seek for material prosperity, first seek for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and the LORD will watch over your ways which will eventually not only lead to material prosperity but an abundant life in Christ. God bless you. Rev. J
