Wake up O sleeper! the foundations are being destroyed
When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psalm 11:3). This was a question asked by king David before his enthronement, probably at a time when he was being pursued by king Saul. King Saul had perverted justice, he no longer had any regard for the fear of the LORD and for the Law. Under king Saul, David saw a society whose foundation is the Law (the Word of God) was being broken and there was need to act, there was need to restore the foundation. So he asked; “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3). You can know that the foundations are being broken when “all things are out of order and course both in church and state; the laws, which are the foundations of government, are despised and disregarded; judgment is perverted, and justice stands afar off; the doctrines and principles of religion are derided and subverted; so that there is no standing, either in a political or religious sense” (John Grill).
This exactly describes the state of communities in many parts of the world today. The church is increasingly laying down God’s word for human philosophies. Justice preached by states are never being practiced by the same. The church which is called to be light and salt of the world is being despised and reduced to social club. The righteous here primarily refers to those who revere the LORD and are obedient to his word, and precisely those made righteous in Christ. History proves that God desires to use human agents in restoring order when the foundations are being broken. Will you who is light and salt of the world wake up, take a stand and act to restore the foundations being broken? Here is “something the righteous ones may do, and should do, when men are attempting to undermine and sap the foundation articles of [true] religion; they should go to the throne of grace, to God in his holy temple, who knows what is doing, and plead with him to put a stop to the designs and attempts of such subverters of foundations; and they should endeavour to build one another up on their most holy faith, and constantly affirm it while others deny it; and should contend earnestly for it, and stand fast in it” (John Grill). May you be among the number to restore the foundations from being broken. Rev. J
