The LORD is my Shepherd: A shepherd’s confession (Psalm 23)

I have had an experience of being a shepherd of my father’s few flocks before and after my early teenage. Shepherding in the jungles in a tropical area is one of the hardest thing. We suffered from heavy tropical rains and were often at the risk of meeting dangerous animals like venomous snakes, cats like leopards, and many other primates among other challenges. We have lost some of our flocks to some of these animals like pythons, baboons, and suffered lots of physical injuries. Such an environment was true to David’s shepherding experience. While shepherding his father’s flock, David met dangerous animals like bears and lions from which he had to defend the flock. The shepherd also has to walk long distances leading the flock to green pasture and water. In his experience, David realised that as the flock needs a shepherd, the shepherd himself needs a shepherd. So he confessed that the LORD is his shepherd. In one of the widely used Psalm 23, David has this confession: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup over flows. surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
Jesus has declared himself as the good shepherd (John 10:11). Mankind like sheep need to be lead, guided and protected. Jesus Christ offers himself for the flock of God to the point of death on the cross. He desires that you belong to the flock of God. He said, “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also” (John 10:16). Are you among the flock in the pen of the LORD? Is the LORD Jesus your shepherd? “How wonderful it is being a sheep in the flock of God. Our shepherd is the one that created the grass that we need for pasture, He is the one that created the rivers and the waters, He is the one who holds everything in His hand and He is my Shepherd” (Edmond Sanganyado). Amen! Rev. J
