Better is a day in the courts of the LORD than a thousand elsewhere

Better is a day in the courts of the LORD than a thousand elsewhere (Psalm 84:10)
During my early and mid-teenage, the church was one of the lousy places to be. I often bowed my head and slept through out the thirty minutes or more time of the sermon. This was partly because it was not my desire but a mandate for all members of my family to go to church every Sunday but also I had no personal commitment to this God that I was made to be in his courts every Sunday. This is not so today, with my wonderful experience in a personal relationship with God, the church (the court of the Lord) has become a number one place I go to willingly, joyfully and regularly.
The Sons of Korah desired to be in the dwelling place of the LORD, they would rather be gatekeepers in the LORD’s house than being important persons elsewhere. They wrote; “How lovely is your dwelling place, LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God… Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.” They continue write that; “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked” (Psalm 84:1-2, 4, 10).
This Psalm speaks greatly about having the LORD as our place of abode. During the time this Psalm was written, the court of the LORD was the Temple located in Jerusalem. Today, Christ dwells in those who have believed and received Him in their lives, their bodies are temples in which the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 6:19). As such, the church building is not the temple of the LORD but  it is a place that brings the living temples of the LORD in communion with one another and congregational communion with the Lord Jesus.
It is not just an option for Christians to gather regularly for worship in the court of the Lord, it is a command. The bible commands; “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25 NLT). Those who desire a day in the Lord’s court than a thousand elsewhere go from strength to strength, till each appear before Christ in his Glorious Kingdom praising the Lord forever. May this be your desire and commitment: Better is one day in your (God’s) courts than a thousand elsewhere. Amen! Rev. J
