I am the gate
“I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good-sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them, I am the Gate” (John 10:7)
Today we reflect on the third “I AM” statement of Jesus (John 10:7) in which Jesus declared that he is the Gate. Ordinarily, a gate is an entrance for entering from one point to another for instance from outside into a room or an enclosure. The purpose of a gate is to control who comes in and out. It is said that a traditional Jewish shepherd would after putting all the sheep into the fold sleep right at the entrance. As we shall later see, Jesus also claims to be the shepherd, as a shepherd he tends the sheep that belongs to the flock.
Jesus Christ is the gate by which we gain entrance into the sheepfold of God. By no other means do we become the partakers of God’s glorious kingdom except through Jesus Christ—the Gate. When Adam and Eve fell short of God’s glory, they were driven out of the Garden of Eden. God placed angelic cherubims to guard the garden, we lost access to God. So, sinful men can but not have any access to God except through Christ.
As noted by Burkit William, Jesus Christ “is the only way and means by which sinners have access to God, and can obtain salvation: the only door by which sinners are entered into the kingdom of grace, and admitted into the kingdom of glory.”
In his commentary, John Trapp rightly stated that “Christ is pleased to call himself [the Gate] because ‘through him we have an access by one Spirit unto the Father,’ Ephesians 2:18; and, ‘in him we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him,’ Ephesians 3:12.”
Rejoice if you have received the grace and entered through the gate into the household of God. Allow the Chief Shepherd who also is the Gate to shepherd you inorder to continue growing in the grace and glory of God.
Prayer: Precious God, thank you for the Gate—Christ Jesus through whom I have accessed you grace. Keep me in the flock all of my life. Amen!
